Born in Antwerp in 1857, Joseph van Genegen became a painter in oils of landscapes, river scenes and occasionally still-lifes. His early work consisted of rather realist images of the environs of Antwerp but by the time he participated in the Casino de Gent exhibition of 1892, his style had loosened and become more impressionist. This example, depicting a landscape in the Kempen area of Belgium dates around 1895, considered the artist’s best period. Joseph van Genegen or Jos, as he was more commonly known, is listed as having participated in a group exhibition of landscape painters in Antwerp in 1898. Later in life he moved to Stokkel near Brussels where he is known to have lived in the early 1930’s. Other examples of his work are currently held in the museum of Sint Niklaas in Belgium.
